The
West Highland Way was the first long distance footpath
to be established in Scotland. The Way runs for 152
km (95 miles) from Milngavie northwards to Fort William
- from the outskirts of Scotland's largest city to the
foot of its highest mountain along the shores of its
largest loch and across its grandest moor.
It
is a magnificent walk of very varied character through
some of the finest scenery of lowland and highland,
mountain and loch, woodland and moorland that Scotland
has to show. It provides walking which is in parts pleasant
and relaxing, in parts strenuous and rough, in parts
remote and exposed to the risk of wild weather.
Much
of the West Highland Way follows ancient and historic
routeways. It makes use of the old footpaths of the
Highlanders, and the drove roads by which they herded
their cattle southwards to Lowland markets in a trade
which was still active a century ago. It makes extensive
use of the 18th century military roads, built largely
by troops to help control the Jacobite clansmen. It
uses old coaching roads and farm roads in Lowlands;
and it follows the course of railway lines where trains
ran not so very long ago.
