WEST HIGHLAND WAY

The West Highland Way was the first long distance footpath to be established in Scotland. The Way runs for 152 km (95 miles) from Milngavie northwards to Fort William - from the outskirts of Scotland's largest city to the foot of its highest mountain along the shores of its largest loch and across its grandest moor.

It is a magnificent walk of very varied character through some of the finest scenery of lowland and highland, mountain and loch, woodland and moorland that Scotland has to show. It provides walking which is in parts pleasant and relaxing, in parts strenuous and rough, in parts remote and exposed to the risk of wild weather.

Much of the West Highland Way follows ancient and historic routeways. It makes use of the old footpaths of the Highlanders, and the drove roads by which they herded their cattle southwards to Lowland markets in a trade which was still active a century ago. It makes extensive use of the 18th century military roads, built largely by troops to help control the Jacobite clansmen. It uses old coaching roads and farm roads in Lowlands; and it follows the course of railway lines where trains ran not so very long ago.

Hotel / Accomodation

When you arrive in Glasgow you may want to book a hotel for the night before you start the West Highland Way. There is a Travelodge hotel in Glasgow which is highly recommend. Excellent room rates, quality rooms and easy access to Milngavie & the start of the West Highland Way. Click on the image below for more info....

For those who are planning to walk the Way it is highly recommended that you use 'The Official Guide to the West Highland Way', which is published on behalf of the Countryside Commission. This provides well-illustrated descriptions of the route with detailed information on the historical, cultural, archaeological and wildlife interest along the Way. Ordnance Survey maps of the area are included.
